Thanks. Actually that vehicle is two components, a gun and limber, connected at a single point, though it's not apparent from that angle. On uneven ground, one axle will tilt one way and the other in the opposite direction. The artillerymen would ride the horses rather than drive from behind because a six-horse team can be better controlled at a gallop with one rider controlling each pair of horses. Check out horse artillery on YouTube and you'll see.
